CARMET, Sonoma County — California State Parks warns that Sonoma Coast beaches, including Carmet’s rugged shoreline, are not suitable for swimming because strong rip currents, heavy surf and sudden swells can endanger even experienced visitors.
Park safety guidance urges people not to turn their back on the ocean, to keep children away from the high-water line and to avoid climbing on unstable shale bluffs or rocks. A beach can appear calm before an unexpectedly large wave reaches higher ground.
Carmet Beach lies along a coastline of small coves and headlands with limited escape routes. Visitors drawn by fishing or tide pools should check tides and surf forecasts before descending steep access trails and should avoid approaching the water when surf conditions are rough.
Practical information
This safety guidance applies regardless of whether a particular beach is officially open. Staff and lifeguards cover a long stretch of coastline, so immediate help may not be nearby. Call 911 in an emergency and do not attempt a rescue that puts additional people in danger.
