CARMET, Sonoma County — A coastal access planning document identifies Carmet as a missing link in the proposed California Coastal Trail and calls for studying a possible route to Marshall Gulch.

The Sonoma County Local Coastal Plan materials reviewed by the California Coastal Commission in November 2024 describe a difficult stretch of coastline: steep cliffs and residential development prevent a continuous shore path between Carmet and Marshall Gulch. The plan proposes examining possible routes on both sides of Highway 1 and seeking land acquisitions only from willing sellers if necessary.

Beyond Marshall Gulch, planners envision a trail connection across Carrington Ranch toward the Salmon Creek Highway 1 bridge, with pedestrian access separated from motor vehicles at the crossing. The document classifies the Carmet link as proposed and lists no existing improvements for the missing segment.

Practical information

The proposal is not an announcement that a continuous Carmet-to-Salmon Creek trail is already open or under construction. Residents should check current state and county park maps before setting out and avoid crossing private properties or unstable bluffs.
