CARMET, Sonoma County — Carmet Beach and nearby Schoolhouse Beach are among the designated Sonoma Coast State Park beaches where dogs are permitted, but pet owners must follow posted leash requirements and protect wildlife.

California State Parks lists Carmet, Schoolhouse, Portuguese and Marshall Gulch among locations allowing dogs. The same state park manages protected western snowy plover habitat at Salmon Creek and Bodega Dunes, where dogs, camping and fires are restricted on designated beach areas. A rule at one beach should not be assumed to apply everywhere along Highway 1.

These restrictions are intended to limit disturbance to threatened shorebirds that nest and forage near the shoreline. Unleashed dogs can also run toward the surf or cliffs, creating risks for both animals and people.

Practical information

Visitors should read signs at their exact parking area before taking pets onto sand or trails and keep dogs under close control. Check the California State Parks page for changed restrictions, as wildlife protections and temporary closures can be adjusted over time.
